I have been teaching middle school math for over five years.  I continue to struggle with the trade-off of letting students discover concepts and giving them time to practice a new skill. Depending on the week and the time of year, I can be on either side of that divide, but it mostly depends on the actual skill being introduced.

Prior to teaching I conducted policy research at the USDA in Washington, DC.  With that background I find myself second guessing presenters introducing the new way to teach, giving evidence from charter schools, or private schools, or magnet schools, that have a huge advantage from student selection.

I am not sure how much longer I’ll be teaching, but I have strong beliefs about how some things could change to improve the educational environment.

I have three children.  Two have diabetes, so I use proportions at least six times a day, figuring out doses for insulin injections.
